A Special Daddy~Daughter Book

Last week I wrote about what a difficult time L has been having while J is away from home. In that post I mentioned I'd been working on a project to help L deal with the separation...and it's here! It arrived in the mail yesterday afternoon and I gave it to my two loves as soon as J got home from work last night. Now I can finally share it with all of you!

A Friday ritual. A single photo, without words capturing a moment from the week.

A simple, special, wonderful moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember.

It's Been One of Those Weeks (or, dealing with difficult toddler emtions)

I've written previously about L's intense attachment to her dad. It's amazing. She is happy just being in the same room with him. However, as she's gotten older and is better able to express herself, we've been struggling to help her process her emotions. She really misses him when he's at work. The weekends are not long enough. The evenings are too short. Our early mornings helping him get ready for work pass too quickly.

He has to go to work. She wants him to stay home.

Even though he has an awesome job, it's hard that he's gone so much. In reality I know we're really lucky--he works regular hours, (usually) has two days off together each each week, doesn't travel much, and we can visit him at work. It could be much, much worse. Unfortunately, none of that matters when you're two years old. All she knows is that he gets up five days a week and leaves the house.

{Love the Place You Live} Weekend at the Beach

We had a family weekend this weekend. Just the three of us (four counting the belly) and our dog. It was amazing. Words cannot describe. It was the kind of weekend that made our two year old randomly say things like, "I love you so much mama and daddy" and "I'm so happy! Are you so happy mama?"
Not that our weekends aren't normally filled with love and happiness...this one was just extra special. That's why I'm writing about the beach yet again. I'm sorry if you're tired of hearing about how much I love the beach.

Preparing for Post-Partum Recovery, Part 1

After L was born I realized I was totally unprepared for the immediate post-partum period. Our midwives said I should plan on spending at least 3 days in bed and I somehow imagined I would be totally fine immediately after that. J and I made reservations to stay at a hotel for four nights so I wouldn't have to go back to the boat immediately. I had my maternity leave worked out. I had a nursing pillow and some breast pads. We had all the baby stuff we needed. I figured I was set.

Like I said, I was totally unprepared.

It turned out that I wasn't able to do stairs for several weeks. Since we were living on a sailboat at the time, this meant we had to drive several hours to my parents house after our hotel stay and we weren't really "home" for about three weeks. In preparing for the post-partum period this time around, I've started by revisiting how things went last time. Just so we're all on the same page, this is what I wrote about those first few weeks at the time:

The first twenty-four hours passed in a daze. We got up every four hours and J. would help me hobble to the restroom and afterward he would help me sit down to nurse L. Then he would help me back to bed and he would burp and change L. We would check her vitals and mine. I was more alert in the morning but still felt like my body was falling apart. More specifically, I felt like all my insides were falling out. I was still lightheaded and short of breath upon standing up.

I'm Becoming An Introvert

Perhaps you noticed my recent absence, perhaps not. With the hubby out of town last week on a business trip I had high hopes of writing all kinds of fabulous blog posts in the evenings after L went to bed and I was on my own.

No such thing happened.

I was busy every minute I wasn't sleeping. Add in a family weekend away and a tired pregnant lady (me) and you get no blog posts for over a week.

I've been in my head a lot--processing emotions, planning, nesting--trying to simultaneously live in the moment and prepare for the little one who will be joining us in a few short months. I've become a bit of an introvert for the time being. I have a bunch of partially finished posts but none that are ready for sharing just yet.

Perhaps in the next couple of days I'll get my thoughts straightened out enough to write a few coherent sentences.

Until well!

P.S. Justine and I decided it would be most practical for our blog carnival to take place every other month. So, if you've been wondering why there wasn't a September call for submissions, that's the reason. The next carnival will be in October.

Guest Post: Nutrition for Expectant Moms (and a recipe for a Watermelon Split!)

In honor of the last day of Empowered Birth Awareness Week, I'm excited to bring you a guest post from Katie Moore! Eating healthy during pregnancy can be stressful, especially if your battling nausea, but it doesn't have to be! Listening to your body and your cravings may be the key to recognizing what your body needs! Be sure to read to the end for a great recipe, more about Katie, and a link to her blog!

Nutrition during pregnancy is a long-debated topic. Up until recently, pregnant women were often encouraged to eat as much of whatever they wanted since they were "eating for two.” However, we now know that expectant moms need proper nutrition in order to give themselves a better chance at a healthy pregnancies and deliveries, and healthy babies as well.

Exploring Your Options: Cloth Diaper Resources

When I was pregnant with L, we knew we wanted to use cloth diapers. We knew they were better for the environment, better for baby, and better for our budget.*

At the time we were living on a small sailboat and washing our laundry at a laundromat. Our best option for using cloth was a diaper service. It was amazing. Every week they dropped off a bag of clean diapers and picked up the bag of dirty ones. When L was ready for a bigger size we just let them know and they'd bring us the next size up. We bought our own covers and I washed them once a week when we did the rest of our laundry.

It was easy. as. pie.

When we moved, using a diaper service was no longer an option. Since we already had covers, I bought some large prefolds and we were set. Eventually a friend gave us some pocket diapers as well...and that introduced me to to the wide range of cloth diapers available in the world. I knew there were a million brands and styles out there but, having always used prefolds and covers (since that was what the diaper service offered), I hadn't really spent much time looking at the other options.

And there are so many options.

Menu Planning: A Week of Gluten Free Meals, Take 2

Because last night was possibly one of the worst. nights. ever. and the hubby got called in to work today, this post will be short and sweet. I'm exhausted and my equally exhausted child could wake up from her nap at any moment.
My favorite part of this week's menu thus far...
(Confession: the main motivation behind this post today is that I don't want to lose my menu plan for the week).

What's on My Nightstand, Part 1 (Or, Did You Read?)

Inspired once again by my favorite bloggy pal, Justine over at the Lone Home Ranger, I've decided to tell you about the stack of books currently sitting on my nightstand. I've been meaning to for a while but haven't gotten around to it. I really like the stack I have on my nightstand right now. I considered writing posts for each of these books individually over the last few months but I decided it would be better to put them all in one post. That said, you'll probably hear about at least a few of them again in future posts.
But in all seriousness, because they're all in a ridiculously huge stack on my nightstand, it would be mean to separate them just now.
